Crushing those narrative dreams

  1. Hatter says:

The sun sank deep below the horizon, taking all light with it. The moon was hidden beneath a thick blanket of clouds, and all was dark. Ben listened intently down the hallway, waiting until he heard the door click behind Charlie and Jeremy before leaving his hiding point behind the couch with a sigh. He slunk down the hallway and up the stairs, checking behind him periodically and jumping at slight noises.
Finally, the brave soldier came to the attic door. He took a deep breath and leaned against it, hand over his heart as he tried to calm it’s frantic pounding. Ben cracked the door open and peeked inside, finally stepping in.
The moon had come out from beneath it’s cover, shedding a dim light upon the attic. Ben paused for a moment in the center of the room to let his eyes adjust before moving towards the window. Outside, a wolf howled and Ben jumped. He looked around, searching for the ghost, sure that it was here somewhere-
And finally slumped from his upright position with a sigh and a look of disappointment. “Okay, this is really anticlimactic,” he muttered dejectedly into the darkness.

DUN DUN DUN!!!! To be continued next Tuesday! Same comic time! Same comic place! Tune in for more scary adventures with Hatter and Ben!

    Ta!

  2. Dani says:

Great narrative drama never happens when you want it to (or when you expect it, for that matter).

  3. Hatter says:

sorry, couldn’t help my earlier comment XD thanks for the great (as usual!) comic!

  4. Ellira says:

    Great comment, Hatter. :p

    Poor old Ben. :(

  5. Miriam says:

Frankly, I would have been disappointed if Ben didn’t go ‘pop’ when he came out of hiding.

  6. Meg says:

I keep imagining Ben making up a sneaky ninja theme song in his head as he ascends those stairs.

  7. Wynne says:

    *pop!*

That sound effect needs to happen more when characters suddenly appear from behind stuff.

Of course, Ben’s reaction to seeing nothing is the perfect cue for the ghost to suddenly materialize behind him. Cue creepy music!

  8. max says:

*Pop* – Ben strikes again! He truely is master of stealth!
I love Charlys pose in panel 2, there are definitely not enough wide shots in most webcomics.
Your work with angles and persepctive is really cool, Ben going up the stairs and drawing breath in front of the door has nice Blairwitchy handheld feeling.

  9. Seanan says:

Haha, I love how he just pops out, kinda like the kid who gets locked in the library for a night… Ben is definitely my favorite.

  10. wandering-dreamer says:

Poor Ben, you’re too genre savvy for your own good.

  11. Cat says:

So recently, I was showing my boyfriend this comic and I showed him page one and then the most current page (previous update). I was amazed at how far your artwork has gone since starting this comic. Honestly, with every page you seem to advance your talent a little bit more. I just wanted to compliment you on your achievements here at Dovecote because they are definitely worth complimenting. :)

And thank you both for continuing to give us this comic every week. It is among my very very top favourites. I honestly adore it and cannot wait for the next update. :)

  12. The one that's not me says:

    I just love, love, LOVE Ben’s “pop!”-face…
